U.S. State Department Issues Urgent Alert: American Citizens Told to Leave Iran Immediately

U.S. State Department Issues Urgent Alert: American Citizens Told to Leave Iran Immediately

The U.S. Department of State has released a countrywide security alert urging all American citizens currently in Iran to depart the country without delay. Dated February 5, 2026, the alert cites ongoing heightened security measures, widespread road closures, public transportation disruptions, and persistent internet blockages imposed by Iranian authorities as key factors creating an unpredictable and potentially dangerous environment for foreigners.

The Iranian government continues to severely restrict access to mobile networks, landlines, and the national internet infrastructure, leading to prolonged outages that complicate communication and access to information. Airlines operating in the region have been limiting services or canceling flights to and from Iran with minimal notice, further restricting air travel options for those attempting to exit the country.

In response, the alert strongly recommends that U.S. citizens prepare independent departure plans that do not depend on U.S. government assistance. Where air travel is unreliable, individuals are advised to consider overland routes to neighboring Armenia or T├╝rkiye if it is safe to do so. For those unable to leave immediately, securing a safe location stocked with essential suppliesΓÇöincluding food, water, medications, and other necessitiesΓÇöis emphasized as a critical precautionary measure.

Additional guidance includes avoiding demonstrations and crowded areas, maintaining a low profile, monitoring local media for developments, keeping communication devices charged, and staying in regular contact with family and friends. The Department also encourages enrollment in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time security updates. This urgent warning underscores the persistent risks faced by Americans in Iran, including the possibility of arbitrary arrest or detention, particularly for dual nationals, amid a backdrop of regional tensions and domestic unrest.

The alert reinforces Iran's longstanding Level 4 Travel AdvisoryΓÇöDo Not TravelΓÇödue to ongoing threats of terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, and wrongful detention of U.S. citizens. American travelers are reminded that the U.S. government has extremely limited ability to provide emergency services inside Iran.
