Authorities have confirmed that Bekzhan Beishekeev, the driver of the semi-truck involved in a deadly collision in Jay County, Indiana, is in custody and being held on an immigration detainer issued by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The crash, which occurred recently on a rural roadway, resulted in the deaths of four passengers in a van transporting an Amish work crew. Law enforcement sources indicate that Beishekeev was taken into custody following the incident, with the ICE detainer preventing his release pending further federal review of his immigration status.
Details surrounding the circumstances of the crash remain under investigation, but preliminary reports suggest the semi-truck collided with the van carrying the workers. The four men killed were identified as Henry Eicher, 50; Menno Eicher, 25; Paul Eicher, 19; and Simon Girod, 23.
The incident has raised questions about road safety in areas frequented by Amish transportation vans, which often serve as a primary means of travel for community members who do not drive automobiles.
